RAGDOLL/CHERUBIM COLORS:
The Ragdoll breed was originally created by Ann Baker in the 1960's by mating a solid black cat with a solid white cat, and then Anne also went on to produce mink and sepia colors, along with the traditional blue-eyed-pointed colors, in her original Ragdoll lines. Mink, sepia, and solid color Ragdolls have been around since the creation of the breed, and all of these colors have been recognized as pure-bred Ragdolls, and have been registered as such under TICA.
As of May 1st, 2025, there will be a slight change to the TICA registration of the mink, sepia, and solid Ragdolls. TICA Ragdoll (RD) will become the TICA Ragdoll Breed Group (RD/CB), which consists of:
(1) Ragdoll (RD - traditional blue-eyed-pointed colors)
(2) Cherubim (CB - non-traditional mink, sepia, and solid colors)
The conformation standards are the same for both Ragdoll and Cherubim cats, as both are within the Ragdoll Breed Group. The only difference between the two is the coat color and eye color. Structure, size, shape, and coat length standards are the same for both. Both have the same super, sappy sweet temperaments that we all love. Cherubim is not a new breed… they are Ragdolls through and through, as they fall within the Ragdoll breed group… just a new name so that these beautiful, rich colors can now be shown and reach TICA championship status, just like the blue-eyed-pointed Ragdolls can.
NOTE: A single litter can consist of both Ragdoll (RD - traditional) and Cherubim (CB - mink, sepia, or solid) kittens, and will be registered under two different names depending on their color, even though they have the same parents. Two Cherubim (non-traditional) parents can also produce Ragdoll (RD - traditional) kittens together. Ragdoll vs. Cherubim is merely a distinction between traditional vs. non-traditional (mink, sepia, solid) colors within the Ragdoll Breed Group.
Mink vs. Traditional: Mink Cherubim Ragdolls have a thicker, plusher coat than traditional Ragdolls, often with an extremely plush tail. The coat of a mink is smoother and much softer than traditional Ragdolls. Minks have a richer colored, more eye-catching coat than traditional Ragdolls. Minks are born with their coat color. Traditional Ragdolls are born completely white and start slowly acquiring their color between 4 to 14 days old. Minks are pointed (darker ears, face, feet, and tail), but their body color is darker than traditional coats. Minks usually have aqua colored eyes (sea blue green) instead of the blue eyes that the traditional Ragdolls have. Aqua eyes can vary from blue with just a small hint of green to almost fully green eyes, but the most common is a very even blue green.
Sepia: Sepia Cherubim Ragdolls are substantially darker coated than their mink siblings. Sepias have the thickest, plushest, and softest coats of all of the pointed Ragdolls. Sepias are pointed (darker ears, face, feet, and tail), but their body color is darker than traditional and mink coats. Where minks usually only have aqua colored eyes, sepias can have green, gold, blue, aqua blue, or a rainbow of other eye colors. The most common eye color in sepias is aqua or green.
Solid: Solid Cherubim Ragdolls are the darkest and highest contrast of all the colors. Sepia, mink, and traditional Ragdolls/Cherubim are all pointed, and have varying shades of color throughout their coat; i.e., darker ears, nose, feet, and tail. A solid does not have this variation, so a black and white solid will have the strong bright white contrast against the rich dark black coloring. Solids have a very soft, thick, plush coat, similar to minks and sepias. Solids can have green, gold, blue, aqua blue, or a rainbow of other eye colors, but most often have green or gold eyes.
Traditional, mink, and sepia color continues to deepen and darken as they mature, until they are up to 3 years old. Solids are born with full color, and they do not darken or lighten as they mature... their coat color remains the same.
